Dubai – MENA Herald: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has conducted a workshop on sustainability for its top management This is the latest in a series of workshops for stakeholders organised by DEWA to encourage and support creative ideas: to develop government performance, spread a sustainable culture among its employees, and support DEWA’s efforts to enhance the competiveness of the UAE and the standing of Dubai as a global axis of sustainability and green economy.

“In line with the long-term national Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative to build a green economy in the UAE, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, we are working to instil sustainability as a major part of our corporate strategy and culture in all areas of our projects and activities at DEWA. We organise these workshops to achieve our vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility. This is in preparation for another workshop, which will take place shortly to introduce our partners and stakeholders to DEWA’s practices and sustainability performance. We are now working to prepare our third Sustainability Report, according to Global Reporting Initiative (GRI G4) standards for issuing sustainable reports, used by corporations around the world,” HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA said in his opening speech.

“DEWA is the first electricity service utility in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region that produces sustainability reports according to the GRI G4 standards. DEWA was also one of 15 organisations in the UAE to provide such a report in 2014 according to these standards, and one of 55 international service utilities to do so according to the 2014 standards,” added Al Tayer.

“This workshop completes a special DEWA top management training programme, which was organised earlier this year in cooperation with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), in line with the directions of our wise leadership, to develop and train UAE staff. We are primarily interested in providing our employees with the required skills to cope with the work demands of DEWA. We aim, through this workshop, to support DEWA’s strategy to improve and develop the skills of Emirati top management, introduce them to the latest international standards, and support our targets to build pioneering and excellent leadership in comprehensive government sustainability. Workshops organised by DEWA introduce top management to DEWA performance and sustainability procedures. They deliver great results, in preparation for the next sustainability report,” concluded Al Tayer.

DEWA is preparing to issue the third annual sustainability report in response to its partners’ wishes, for it to be more transparent about sustainability and the performance of sustainability management at DEWA. It is preparing the report internally in line with the best standards of transparency and professionalism as part of the international initiative. This has a special standard for issuing sustainability reports, used by utilities around the world to showcase the effects and performance of sustainability.

The Global Reporting Initiative for sustainable reports is an independent, international non-profit organisation, which supervises the issuing of sustainability reports, which include social, ecological and economic performance. It helps corporations, companies, government departments and other organisations to better understand the issue of sustainability.
