Dubai – MENA Herald: A high-level delegation from world-leading Nike Inc. has recently visited the Department of Economic Development (DED) in Dubai to discuss best practices in protecting intellectual property (IP) and consumer rights. The delegation also explored ways for better co-ordination with DED to fight counterfeiting, and honoured DED in appreciation of its efforts to protect the Nike brand against fraudulent practices.
“Internationally acknowledged brands like Nike visiting us marks a major achievement in the ongoing efforts by the Department of Economic Development to consolidate relations with owners of world-leading brands,” Ali Ibrahim, Deputy Director General of DED, remarked while receiving the delegation.
“The Commercial Compliance & Consumer Protection (CCCP) sector in DED focuses on protecting intellectual property rights, especially since an efficient IP environment is integral to achieving sustainable economic development and driving traffic in the thriving retail sector in Dubai, and the UAE in general,” Ibrahim added.
Mohammed Rashed Ali Lootah, Executive Director of CCCP, said the two sides discussed the potential for joint initiatives to reach out to as many consumers and traders as possible and educate them on their rights and responsibilities.
“The Commercial Compliance & Consumer Protection sector is keen to share knowledge with both private and government sector partners and take stock of the notable developments in terms of their policies and regulations, to make our IP protection efforts more effective,” Lootah added.
It was also agreed during the discussions that Nike representatives in the UAE will work closely with CCCP to fight counterfeiting and protect consumers. “Nike being one of the leading sports goods brands with a strong tradition in addressing commercial fraud through varied campaigns, CCCP is delighted to work with them and we consider their recognition of DED’s efforts in IP rights protection a great honour,” said Lootah.
Protecting consumers from counterfeits requires effective cooperation between governments and brands. The Dubai DED, and particularly the CCCP, have been strong partners in this effort,” said Bill Berner, Senior Director Nike Global Brand Protection.
Ibrahim Behzad, Director of Intellectual Property Rights Protection, and Mashoor Al Shamsi, Senior Manager, Intellectual Property Rights Protection section in DED also attended the meeting with the visiting delegation.
