DEWA organises 6th Science Week

Dubai - MENA Herald: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has launched its 6th Science Week under the theme ‘Innovative Emirati Engineer.’ University professors, college students, and a number of DEWA’s representatives and employees took part. The theme ‘Innovative Emirati Engineer’ reflects DEWA’s commitment to supporting Emiratisation, and improving the skills of Emirati engineers, making them capable of innovation, to actively contribute towards achieving DEWA’s objectives. This adheres to the vision of the UAE’s wise leadership.
“I am happy to welcome you all to DEWA’s 6th Science Week, which is being held under the theme ‘Innovative Emirati Engineer,’ with the participation of university professors, university and college students, and a number of DEWA’s representatives and employees. Science Week supports the National Innovation Strategy, which was launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make the UAE one of the most innovative countries in the world, and transform Dubai into an international role model for Research and Development (R&D), to achieve the highest levels of energy efficiency, while increasing dependence on clean and renewable energy. DEWA works to achieve the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to transform Dubai into an international hub for clean energy and green economy. The strategy also aims to increase Dubai’s total power output from clean energy to 7% by 2020, 25% by 2030, and to 75% by 2050,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“Since DEWA’s launch of Science Week in 2010, we have been providing a platform to facilitate the exchange of best practices, skills, techniques, scientific knowledge, and the latest updates in different technical fields related to energy. DEWA’s Scientific Week also establishes new communication channels to share skills and knowledge, and introduce new projects by external or in-house engineers, to achieve DEWA’s strategic objectives. The event aims to cover different technical and electrical aspects related to generation, transmission, and distribution. This supports DEWA’s efforts to preserve natural resources, and its vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility.
DEWA is committed to cooperating with different local and international scientific organisations as sustainability partners, to exchange knowledge, skills, and best practices, while implementing joint initiatives to improve corporate performance and develop services,” added Al Tayer.
“DEWA’s 6th Science Week supports the UAE Vision 2021, which aims to make the UAE one of the greatest countries in the world by 2021, by developing a knowledge based economy. DEWA’s Science Week also supports the Dubai plan 2021, which will shape the Emirate into a city inhabited by happy, creative, and empowered people, in addition to the Smart Dubai Initiative, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bun Rashid Al Maktoum, to make Dubai the smartest, and happiest city in the world. The theme ‘Innovative Emirati Engineer’ reflects DEWA’s commitment to support Emiratisation, and improving the skills of Emirati engineers.
DEWA introduced the Innovation Centre as a new activity at this year’s Science Week, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The Innovation Centre was introduced to support students from the Dubai Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled, providing community service, while gaining scientific and practical knowledge. I hope that DEWA’s Science Week will provide you with the opportunity to exchange skills and knowledge, and enhance cooperation between different participating organisations, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come,” concluded Al Tayer.
DEWA’s 6th Science Week features discussions about the latest solar energy projects, smart grids, electricity generation, the development of electricity transmission and distribution networks, and fibre-optic cables. It will also highlight the Dubai Smart Soil initiative, which involves a special mix of soils, used to cover medium-voltage cables.
During Science Week, DEWA honoured Dr. Riadh AL-Dabbagh, Professor at Ajman University of Science and Technology (AUST), and Dr. Abdul Hai Alami, from the University of Sharjah.
