Abu Dhabi - MENA Herald: This week, Shell hosted its second “Shell Technology Day” at the Jumeirah Etihad Towers in Abu Dhabi. Under the theme “Technology Innovation and Deployment” the conference was attended by over 120 participants and focused on the latest insights into the advances in Shell’s global technologies across the upstream, midstream and downstream businesses. Presenting at the conference were Shell Abu Dhabi’s senior leaders and experts as well as the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) Deputy Director for Exploration & Production, Mr. Yasser Saeed Al Mazrouei, who was the key note speaker. In attendance were also delegates from ADNOC, its group companies, Masdar, the Petroleum Institute and Shell companies in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Shell senior experts and scientists presented their insights with the audience, including panel sessions that focused on CO2 capture technologies, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies, operational readiness and technology deployment. Case studies on sour gas operations were also presented at the event.
Shell has been present in Abu Dhabi for more than seventy-five years, and this heritage was highlighted during the Technology Day presentations, which provided attendees with a good opportunity to learn about the company’s long-term experience in contributing to Abu Dhabi’s oil and gas development, as well as to discuss the main challenges facing the UAE’s future energy requirements.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Andrew Vaughan, Shell Vice President for Abu Dhabi and Kuwait and Country Chairman for Shell Abu Dhabi, said “ADNOC and the Joint Venture companies are among our most important partners and this workshop is an opportunity to share the latest technology innovations we have; how they’re applied in development and operations and then to hear if this is what our partners need and what they want more of.”
During his key note speech at the event, Mr. Yasser Saeed Al Mazrouei, said “Research and development are undeniably significant parts of the oil and gas production process today. Hence, they are at the forefront of ADNOC’s priorities.” Adding that “Advanced research is the key to developing technologies as part of our quest to enhance methods of extracting from hydrocarbon reservoirs economically.”
“ADNOC is keen on technology transfer technology, knowledge and guidance in scientific research to serve national development institutions and the oil and gas industry to lay a solid foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi through strengthening its research and development capabilities and competencies across scientific institutions and research centres affiliated with ADNOC at the Petroleum Institute and the Research Centre, as well as through collaborations with local and international institutes and universities.” said Mr. Al Mazrouei, adding that ADNOC uses the latest technology across its group companies and as such, looks to partner with companies like Shell which are technology pioneers in the energy industry.
In closing, Mr. Al Mazroui encouraged participants attending the conference to work with Shell to strengthen their R&D programmes and promote the transfer of technology and expertise as well as the development of the UAE’s youth, thus providing a better future for them, highlighting that there have already been some 20 secondments to Shell in the last decade.
