DEWA to install 160,000 LED light bulbs and solar panels to Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment housing projects

Dubai - MENA Herald: Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) will supply 2,000 existing and new homes from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment (MBRHE) project with 160,000 LED light bulbs and photovoltaic panels. The move aims to reduce the demand for energy as well as the long- and medium-term costs for electricity, the plan follows the signing of a MoU between DEWA and MBRHE in 2015.
“We are honored to work alongside the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment and contribute to the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative, which was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to achieve sustainable development in Dubai. This partnership is another step towards achieving the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 to reduce energy demand by 30% by 2030, and the Carbon Abatement Strategy to reduce carbon emissions by 16% by 2021,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“Installing LED light bulbs in 2,000 homes will greatly-reduce energy demand. Though these bulbs are initially more expensive than traditional light bulbs, they will save a large amount of money in the medium- and long-term.
We also plan to supply other homes within the Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment housing project with photovoltaic panels, as part of DEWA’s Shams Dubai initiative, to encourage building owners to install photovoltaic panels on rooftops to generate solar power.
Al Tayer explained that supplying the lights will help increase the uptake of renewable energy as well as the share of electricity, thus limiting the use of natural resources and encouraging sustainability.
Sami Abdullah Gargash, CEO of the MBRHE, commended DEWA’s efforts to support sustainable growth in Dubai, as well as efforts to enhance prosperity and wellbeing for citizens, residents, and visitors to the Emirate.
